WHAT DOES OUR ASSOCIATION STAND FOR?

by Jeff Ridley APF CJF TE, AAPF/CAPF President

I am sure that each of our members can put a different spin on what our association is doing for them or why they have chosen to be a part of this rapidly growing group of farriers, veterinarians, and other equine professionals. Is it because we have waited long enough to have an association that is truly as great as the profession we love? Is it because we are fostering relationships with other professional organizations such as the United States Hunter/Jumper Association or the American Association of Equine Practitioners? Is it because we have chosen the path of being inclusive rather than exclusive? Is it because we all recognize the need to continue our education and see the AAPF as an opportunity to do anything we want? We have no history or limits as to where we can go with this organization. I think the answer to all of these questions and a million more would be YES!!!

If you step outside of your own backyard you will quickly learn that there are many approaches to shoeing a horse. Most experienced farriers will tell you it is certainly not a black and white world in which we live and work. However, just in case you do have all the answers, I have a few lame ones and I would like to solicit your help :). So please step up beyond just being a member, get involved, give us your thoughts, your visions and your ideas of how you can help and make the association grow. Please remember that any association, especially a volunteer association, is only as good as its members!

I would like to tell you about a member that I met for the first time at the International Hoof-Care Summit this year, Mike Bagley. On day one, Mike stepped up and hung out at our booth the entire duration that the market place stayed open. Mike worked as hard, if not harder, than any of our staff answering questions and encouraging new membership. Yep, he was there just like that every single day. When we all went home, he continued by asking to be placed on a committee and work he has! He has since donated some used tools to be used on an AAEP Equitarian project in Costa Rica. It seems like everywhere I turn I keep seeing this enthusiastic member or the work he has done. I wish to say thank you to Mike. I am proud to stand next to you!

I would like to make AAPF members aware of an opportunity to help out in another area. The AAEP is working on a Laminitis study and could use your assistance in recognizing horses that may be susceptible to laminitis but have not encountered laminitis in the past. They need your assistance to help identify horses and alert veterinarians of recent cases of laminitis as there is a maximum time frame of 4 weeks following the onset of laminitis to qualify for this study. As we enter the spring grass season and possibly identify such a candidate that could be included in this study, we or the client should make the local veterinarian aware that this horse may qualify for the AAEP case study. They do not need to be an AAEP member to submit a case, but they must be a licensed veterinarian. You should have received a copy of this laminitis study information via email. Please take a look at the study design, look at the video to familiarize yourself with this type of horse, save the link provided and then keep an eye out for new cases of laminitis. Encourage your veterinarian to participate and share the information they gather with this study.

AAPF WEBSITE UPDATES

Here are some tips for using this new site:

1.  Website Sponsors

We are pleased to announce that W.F. Young (manufacturers of Absorbine, Hooflex, Magic Cushion, Ultra Shield, and other products) has become a sponsor of the AAPF/CAPF website.  You'll see their banner ads on our home page.  Please help us by going to our website and clicking on their banner ads.  This will take you to their website to learn more about their products.  Monetta Farrier Specialties is also a sponsor of both our website and our newsletter.  We sincerely appreciate the support from these two companies.

2.  Change Username and Password

Once you logon to the site (www.ProfessionalFarriers.com) you can go to the "Member Information" area and on the right hand side of the screen you'll see a link for "Change Username/Password".  Click on this link and a screen will appear that allows you to change your Username and Password.   Neither the AAPF office nor the website host records this information so if you lose it, you can call the AAPF office and we will send you information on how to change it.

2.  AAPF/CAPF Mobile App

A mobile app for Android, iOS and HTML5 platforms is now available.  Simply go to the point of downloading applications for your phone and search on "professional farriers".  You should then find the app.  You will be able to navigate through the various features of the app - including the Member Directory, Calendar of Events and Online Store.  If you log in to the "Members Only" section you will be able to make changes to your membership profile and pay any outstanding invoices (including membership renewals).

The username and password for the mobile app are the same as the username and password for the website.

15th ANNUAL FARRIERS WEEK — JULY 7-13, 2013

from our friends at the American Farriers Journal

Farriers work hard year-round to provide quality hoof care for horses worldwide. To honor their dedication and service, American Farriers Journal created National Farriers Week. In its 15th year, National Farriers Week is an opportunity to honor farriers. We think it is important for horse owners, trainers, riders, grooms, veterinarians and others in the equine community to say “thanks” for all of the terrific work farriers do.

Although we hope appreciation is shown all year long, we’re encouraging horse owners, trainers, riders, grooms vets, and others to acknowledge their farrier’s hard work from July 7-13, 2013.

American Farriers Journal is again going to spotlight farriers based on feedback. From now until July 1, they are encouraging horse owners to submit pictures and videos of their farrier working with their horses, share why they appreciate their farrier and tell us a story about their farrier.

If you are a farrier making a difference in the industry, send us your pictures and tell us a unique story of how you helped improve a horse’s life. This year, we will also be accepting video submissions. Share a brief video with us of yourself talking about a mentor who has made a difference in your career. We will be featuring your stories, and the stories horse owners share with us during National Farriers Week on Facebook, Twitter and www.AmericanFarriers.com.

Great or small, we want to hear everything farriers are doing to support the industry. You can submit your photos, videos and stories to Michelle Sauer at msauer@lesspub.com. Be sure to include your full name and location with your submission (if you are a horse owner, please include your farriers full name and location as well).

American Farriers Journal has also posted a certificate for National Farriers Week that horse owners can download and personalize for their farriers. It can be downloaded at www.americanfarriers.com/ff/2013NFW.

We look forward to hearing your stories, sharing your pictures and highlighting the individuals who work hard to keep our horses sound.

Special Thanks to Monetta Farrier Specialties for Sponsoring the AAPF/CAPF Newsletter

RAY AMATO SR APF - AAPF/CAPF HONORARY LIFE MEMBER

(March 25, 2013, Boynton Beach, FL) At Fasig-Tipton's Florida Sale the American and Canadian Associations of Professional Farriers (AAPF/CAPF) presented an honorary life membership to Mr. Ray Amato Sr of Westbury, New York and Hallandale Beach, Florida.  Mr. Amato, following in the footsteps of his father, began his farrier carrier in 1949.  Through the years his work ethic has been noticed and recognized by some of the great Thoroughbred trainers including Hirsch Jacobs, Frank (Pancho) Martin, Robert (Bobby) Frankel, Flint (Scotty) Schulhofer, and in recent years, Todd Pletcher.  Mr. Amato's son, Ray Amato Jr., is now following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather.

Notable horses he has shod over the course of his career have included Seattle Slew, Lemon Drop Kid, Harlan's Holiday and the 2010 Kentucky Derby winner - Super Saver.

AAPF/CAPF members in attendance at the presentation included AAPF/CAPF director Steve Prescott APF CJF, fellow honorary life members Red Renchin APF CF and Larry Rumsby APF CJF, Louise Mongeau, James Gilchrist APF, Curtis Burns APF and AAPF/CAPF executive director Bryan Quinsey.

"Presenting this life membership, on behalf of the AAPF/CAPF Board of Directors, to Mr. Amato - a farrier who has devoted his entire life to the betterment of the horse and the horse industry - was one of the greatest honors of my farrier career.  Ray's commitment and dedication to the Thoroughbred industry was clearly demonstrated by his humbleness in receiving such an award as well as the outpouring of support he received from the numerous Thoroughbred owners, trainers, veterinarians, farriers and friends who attended today's presentation," said Steve Prescott APF CJF.

AAPF/CAPF WEBSITE NEEDS PICTURES

If you recently visited our new website you'll see a section in the middle of the screen which features pictures of horses which have been shod by our members.  Below each picture is the name of the horse along with the name of the farrier who shod the horse.   And if you click on the picture you'll be taken to either the website or Facebook page of the farrier or the owner/trainer of the horse.

If you have access to a picture of a horse (or horses) you've shod, please send them to the AAPF/CAPF office.  We also will need the website or Facebook page you want us to link to.
